California’s solar power generation has made up for the drought-induced production shortcomings of the hydropower industry. Solar production has risen to the point that California has become the first state with more that 5% of its electricity produced from solar.
But these numbers might not tell the whole story.
Solar electricity production is easily quantified by the utility agencies, but they do not count generation from smaller rooftop residential systems.
When the bulk of US generation was made up nearly entirely of power plants, this data was cut and dry, but now the gaps in data have grown.
