Frequently Asked Solar Questions

Frequently Asked Solar Questions

What does a system cost?

The cost of a system varies according to size, location and type (roof top, ground-mounted or carport). On average, clients who purchase a system can expect to see a 5-9 year payback on their investment.

How long does a solar PV system last?

One should expect a solar PV system to last at least 25 years, with minimal maintenance requirements.

What type of solar equipment do you use?

In addition to developing solar projects, Tandem Solar also has an active equipment wholesale business. We only use and sell equipment that has: 1) a proven track record of performance in the field, 2) long-term warranties and performance guarantees and, 3) a large, financially stable parent company that stands behind its warranties. Please refer to our Partners page for further information on our equipment suppliers.

How many solar panels do I need?

The number of solar panels or, more specifically, the size of your system in kilowatts, depends on a number of variables: the amount of electricity consumed by your property over the course of a year, the space available to install a solar PV system, your geographic location, and your budget. All these factors are carefully weighed and reflected in the design of your solar system and in the overall solar solution presented too you.

Who installs your systems?

Tandem works in partnership with a network of experienced, licensed installers with proven track records across a variety of solar PV systems, ranging from residential systems to mid-size commercial and industrial systems to utility-scale solar farms. This allows Tandem’s clients to benefit from installation experience and know-how specific to their system type and size. Please refer to our Partners page for further information on our installation partners.

How much maintenance does a solar PV system require?

Solar systems, by design, are extremely low-maintenance. There are no moving parts which wear out and each component is manufactured to withstand years of exposure to extreme winds, rain, sunlight and dust.

What warranties come with a solar PV system?

Tandem only purchases equipment from industry-leading manufacturers with robust warranties. These warranties are extended to the system owner and include:

  • 10-year workmanship and 25-year production warranties on modules (panels)
  • 10-year or 20-year warranty options on inverters
  • 20-year warranty on racking (the structural support system which holds the panels in place)

Tandem’s installation partners also provide a standard 3-year workmanship warranty on the installation itself.

Can solar power my property during a blackout?

No. For safety reasons, utility regulators require that a solar PV system that is connected to the grid be shut off during blackouts. This is to stop energy from a solar PV system being fed back into the utility lines while workers are attempting repairs. When grid power is restored, your solar PV system will automatically switch back on.

How does solar affect my property value?

According to the Appraisal Institute, a global association of professional real estate appraisers, a solar PV system increases property values by $20,000 for each $1,000 in annual cost savings. Furthermore, a solar PV system compares very favorably with other improvements in terms of percentage of cost recovered. Often, a solar system can recover much more than 100% of its cost, with this percentage increasing over time as electricity rates rise.
